PARADISTORG (1977)

A merchant’s house in the Stockholm archipelago. Katha, an old woman comes here every year. So does her father, who once built the house. She wants the family, her children and their children to join her at Paradistorg. This leads to conflicts.

Ever the faithful Bergman collaborator, this was Gunnel Lindblom’s debut as a film director. Alongside her acting career she had previously directed a number of stage plays, and adapted one of them for television.

It was Bergman who first suggested filming Ulla Isaksson’s novel ‘Paradise Square’, indicating that he would be willing to produce it via his own company Cinematograph. Lindblom had known Isaksson for some time, and Bergman had directed both Brink of Life and The Virgin Spring based on original screenplays by Isaksson. Bergman now felt the time was right for the two of them to write something together. He and Isaksson set to work towards the end of 1975, and by the summer of the next year they were ready to start shooting. The support of the Swedish Film Institute was virtually a formality, and SF was interested in the project (Source: ingmarbergman.se).

Set in 17^th century Norway, The Witch Hunt tells the story of a woman who returns to her hometown after a failed marriage; she is regarded as a witch due to her use of herbal medicine and love affair and gets ostracized. With the cold somber long takes, the film examines how women are isolated in a patriarchy, condemning the fear imposed upon women by history and power. The Witch Hunt put Breien together with Chantal Akerman among the most important female directors in the history of European cinema. The film won Special Mention for Historical Reconstruction and Best Actress at the 1981 Venice Film Festival.

In 1969 Palestinian Leila Khaled made history by becoming the first woman to hijack an airplane. As a Palestinian child growing up in Sweden, filmmaker Lina Makboul admired Khaled for her bold actions; as an adult, she began asking complex questions about the legacy created by her childhood hero.
