The director of the film based on the novel of the same name by Dezső Kosztolányi worked out the scenes with absolute precision. Abel was the big surprise of the 1986 cinema year. Out of nowhere, the film by debut director Alex van Warmerdam drew more than 400,000 visitors to Dutch cinemas. And this despite the fact that Van Warmerdam, a theatre director at Orkater and De Mexicaanse Hond, had no film experience whatsoever. Truly everything about Abel was idiosyncratic, authentic, and unpredictable. The press praised the dialogue, the design, and the “vintage” Van Warmerdam atmosphere.
