A macho Cossack immigrant to the U.S. goes West and joins a ring of rustlers. Later his son follows him to states and he too begins stealing cows. Not knowing his father very well, the youth is anxious to prove himself a manly man and a friendly rivalry develops until the father is captured and imprisoned. Meanwhile, his son joins the cavalry and secretly engineers a break out. He succeeds and then feels terrible guilt, for it is his unit that has been assigned to bring his father to justice.

Not great quality for this one and this particular copy, sourced from a DVDR of unknown origin had a few places where the film would freeze for more than 10 seconds and then resume, this happens during the first 22 minutes, I removed all or most of the frozen dead time so now when it happens it’s only half a second to 2 seconds (see 13:10 for example), counting all the freeze glitches there’s probably 2 minutes of the film lost. If anyone has a better copy without any glitches please let me know. Thanks!

Just paroled from a prison term for manslaughter, ex-Marine Jim Hughes makes a new start with his wife Ellen and ten-year-old son Paul, on a ranch given him by his old Corps commander. Krivak, a vicious neighbor, threatens to take the land away from him after Jim refuses to sell. He instigates a fight between his dog Thunder and Paul’s much smaller dog, which is killed. Later, the grieving Paul finds a wild puppy, half dog and half wolf, and Jim lets him keep it. Preparing to take his herd to market, Jim finds his fences cut and his herd stolen. He is accosted by two escaped convicts, Trent and Hawkins, who knew Jim in prison, and they force him to take them in.

The 1978 series pilot True Grit is based on the 1969 John Wayne film of the same name. Warren Oates brings his own characteristic touches to the old Wayne role of Rooster Cogburn, the “one-eyed fat man” (now a one-eyed thin man with a beard) who agrees to help headstrong orphaned teenage girl Mattie Ross (Lisa Pelikan). Mattie wants to get to her relatives in California, but she and Cogburn get off to a bad start when Rooster loses their train fare in a poker game. He tries to recoup their loss by mining for gold in Wyoming, then by riding shotgun on the gold shipments. Had the pilot sold, it would have detailed the further adventures of Cogburn and Mattie (as indicated by the original network title, True Grit: A Further Adventure).

Period piece about a Brazil that is no more. This movie is the sequel to “Black God, White Devil”, and takes place 29 years after Antonio das Mortes killed Corisco (the “Blond Devil”), last of the Cangaceiros. In “the old days”, Antonio’s function in life was to exterminate these bandits, on account of his personal grudges against them. His life had been meaningless for the last 29 years, but now, a new challenge awaits him. When a Cangaceiro appears the local Land Baron, an old man, does what seems obvious to him: he calls Antonio das Mortes, killer of Cangaceiros. At first, Antonio is ecstatic. His life has gained new meaning. But soon it becomes obvious that this new Cangaceiro (named Coirana) is no Corisco, but an idealist.

Note: Despite being an HD transfer this copy isn’t that great, has a lot of ghosting and playback is jerky at times but it’s still better than was available previously, hopefully a proper restoration will be done soon, it really deserves to be watched at the highest quality possible.

UTAH WAGON TRAIN (1951)

Rancher Rex Allen receives a summons from his uncle, an old time frontiersman, that he is in trouble. The uncle has been hired to lead a modern-day band of adventurers on a wagon train retracing the route taken by their ancestors 100 years ago. Before Rex can talk to his uncle, the uncle is murdered, and Rex sets out to find the killer and the motive by taking his uncle’s place as the leader of the wagon train. He discovers that the motive was the gold that the original pioneers had cached in a cave on the trail to California, and now has to find the culprit that is after it.

Many thanks to John for the copy. Quality is pretty bad and it has Portuguese subs burned-in but it’s the only copy I’ve been able to locate, there’s many image glitches throughout the whole film but it’s complete, hopefully a better copy will turn up at some point.
