Japanese sixties comedy featuring a cunning female jewel thief named Black Lizard who tries to kidnap Sanaye, a wealthy jeweler’s beautiful daughter as part of a plot to steal the jeweler’s expensive “Star of Egypt” diamond. To thwart the planned kidnapping, the jeweler hires Japan’s number one detective, the brilliant Akechi. This sets off a dual between Black Lizard and Akechi as each tries to outwit the other. In the process, the two adversaries develop a mutual respect and affection for each other.

Marja is a prostitute who has to run away, when her pimp Jussi robs and kills one of her costumers. She finds a hiding place in a mansion on the country side. Marja falls in love with the master of the mansion, but Jussi finds out Marjas whereabouts and comes to meet her.

Director Ronald af Hällström’s first film for Fenno-Filmi is a powerful melodrama set in the world of crime and prostitution, much in the vein of Teuvo Tulio’s 1944 film The Way You Wanted Me (where af Hällström worked as an assistant director), but more grounded in reality and showing a more sophisticated use of the influences of early film noir and French poetic realism. A box office success in France in the early 1950s (where it was titled L’Entôleuse), The Callbird has since then been overshadowed by Tulio’s 1940s melodramas and af Hällström’s later films like The Witch. As a more pure-bred example of Finnish noir than Tulio’s strange mixtures of melodrama, film noir and thriller, af Hällström’s most important contribution to this genre is a film ripe for rediscovery.

This melodrama has Thelma and Jess, two Americans who move into a down-at-the-heels Paris neighborhood. The couple is still suffering from the loss of their only son in an automobile accident that happened some time in the distant past. Thelma tends to drown her sorrows in alcohol, while Jess is introspected and morose. After they hire a maid to help out with the housework, she falls for the taciturn Jess. Her interest seems to be only a simple attraction, yet appearances, as it turns out, are deceiving.

Johnny One-Eye was adapted from one of Damon Runyon’s lesser-known stories. Pat O’Brien and Wayne Morris star as Martin Martin and Dane Cory respectively, former partners in crime who have long since split up. When a new district attorney puts the heat on, Cory, anxious to save his own hide, accuses Martin of an unsolved murder. Holed up in abandoned house, Martin is befriended by a little girl and her dog. It so happens that the girl is the daughter of the crusading DA, and thereby hangs the rest of this tale.
