Haunted by the human consequences of the records he handles, he becomes increasingly troubled by the way history can preserve injustice as easily as it preserves memory. As Armen struggles to reconcile his desire for truth with his concern for the people affected by it, his personal life and growing relationship with a young woman named Anahit intertwine with a profound meditation on memory, identity, and the weight of history.

Unless there’s an official release on Bluray this is probably the best quality copy we’ll see of this Armenian gem and of course it wouldn’t have been possible to see it if it wasn’t for the selfless work of an internet pirate who spent countless hours working on the restoration of this film working with multiple sources and combining them to create the best copy available, both in video and audio. Thanks a lot to sjostrom27 @KG for this restoration!

EDES ANNA (1958) https://rarefilm.torrentbay.st/2026/06/edes-anna-1958/ https://rarefilm.torrentbay.st/2026/06/edes-anna-1958/#respond Sun, 07 Jun 2026 01:49:16 +0000 https://rarefilm.torrentbay.st/?p=36503 The heroine of this drama played out at the beginning of the Horthy era is a chambermaid who has travelled up from the countryside to work in the capital. Through her vulnerability we clearly see the interdependency of society at that time. Anna moves from paradise to a family lacking in love or compassion, where she loses everything and everyone who once loved her. The director of the film based on the novel of the same name by Dezső Kosztolányi worked out the scenes with absolute precision. Thanks to this and the finest actors of the age, we have one of the most moving films ever made in Hungary.

“From the very moment when Anna turns up in the story, everything you see is presented from her point of view… My purpose was to make the viewer experience along with her the complicated psychological process she is undergoing: the mental stages of heart-sickening solitude, of endless humiliation, of suddenly awakening love, of sudden ecstasy, of the pangs of love, of forsakenness, of ultimate depression, and of final exaltation.” – Zoltán Fábri.

DZĪVĪTE (1989) https://rarefilm.torrentbay.st/2026/06/dzivite-1989/ https://rarefilm.torrentbay.st/2026/06/dzivite-1989/#respond Sun, 07 Jun 2026 01:08:12 +0000 https://rarefilm.torrentbay.st/?p=36361 A homage to Krišjānis Barons and his life’s work – to collect and catalogue Latvian folksongs or dainas, thus creating the encyclopaedia of Latvian life, a poetic reflection of the knowledge of life accumulated over the centuries. The film is based on Krišjānis Barons’ life during late 1800s and early 1900s – his childhood and youth in Latvia, studies and work in St. Petersburg and other places in Russia, his relationship with his faithful wife Dārta, and the awakening of the Latvian national self-awareness.

Director Aivars Freimanis and poet Jānis Peters worked on the screenplay for the film on Krišjānis Barons for many years, creating a sincere story about a great personality, but trying to avoid the traditional glorification of the Father of Dainas. The director wanted to make a film about a true personality, therefore he let loose his creative spirit, and Dear Life is not a “regular” biopic by any means. It surprises with various artistically and professionally challenging methods that attract the audience’s attention. The main characters, Krišjānis and Dārta, are played by two pairs of great actors, but the story is full of unexpected plot twists, merging the characters and events of the first national awakening with elements of the third national awakening that took place at the time when the film was made.

His search takes him to a gypsy village where he befriends Izidor and witnesses the pains and joys of the Romani experience.

Far from romanticizing Roma communities, Tony Gatlif continues in The Crazy Stranger with the portrait of minorities excluded from cinema’s dominant representation. Therefore, the Roma community is shown in all its vitality, passion, and talent, but also in its tendency towards inebriation, crime and violence, a result of the segregation and xenophobia of the world around them.
