In 1937 Shanghai, a soon-to-depart soldier meets a young woman under a bridge during a Japanese air raid. They vow to meet after the war ends, but they don’t each other’s name or face. Ten years later, the young woman, a nightclub singer, takes in a naive girl fresh from the country. The country girl falls in love with the would-be song-writer upstairs who, unbeknownst to the singer, is none other than the soldier from the bridge.

Joe Gower’s job is skating through library shelves, fetching books. A police officer and friend of his is chosen to participate in a charity dance performance. Gower agrees to take his place in the show by posing as a police officer. He falls for a female officer in the show, and gets into various scrapes with fellow cops and also crooks, and he dances.
Trying to keep her head above water, New Yorker Doris accepts money for sexual favors from men who occasionally visit her apartment, a practice that bugs her neighbor, Felix, an unsuccessful writer. Felix gets her booted, but when she complains to him, he lets her bunk at his place. Reserved Felix and outlandish Doris have little in common, but as they’re forced to spend more time together, their proximity leads to an increasing mutual fondness.
It’s music, mayhem and fun in the sun as three aspiring rockers attempt to scare up enough money to get their instruments out of hock. To do this, they pose as women, enter a contest and find themselves competing against such acts as the Righteous Brothers, the Supremes and the Four Seasons.
Dr. Edward Blis, Jr, a chiropractor by day, moonlights as a professional wrestler at night. His wrestling name is the Naked Man and he wears a naked body suit when wrestling. After his parents are killed by Sticks Varona, a cripple with crutches which double asmachine guns, and an Elvis Presley impersonator, he loses his sanity. He adopts the persona of his wrestling character and goes on a rampage of revenge.
Spoiled society girl Penny Cooper impulsively lends her voice to a Communist rally, which earns her a public spanking by 100% All-American waiter Alan Blake. Impressed by Blake’s boldness, Penny’s ulcerated father, soup tycoon Millburn Cooper, hires the young man as a vice-president, hoping in this way to keep his daughter in line.
During his senior year, a high-school student must deal with his girlfriend and parents, and make a difficult decision whether to do the safe thing and go to college or try for a glamorous baseball career.
