A homage to Krišjānis Barons and his life’s work – to collect and catalogue Latvian folksongs or dainas, thus creating the encyclopaedia of Latvian life, a poetic reflection of the knowledge of life accumulated over the centuries. The film is based on Krišjānis Barons’ life during late 1800s and early 1900s – his childhood and youth in Latvia, studies and work in St. Petersburg and other places in Russia, his relationship with his faithful wife Dārta, and the awakening of the Latvian national self-awareness.

Director Aivars Freimanis and poet Jānis Peters worked on the screenplay for the film on Krišjānis Barons for many years, creating a sincere story about a great personality, but trying to avoid the traditional glorification of the Father of Dainas. The director wanted to make a film about a true personality, therefore he let loose his creative spirit, and Dear Life is not a “regular” biopic by any means. It surprises with various artistically and professionally challenging methods that attract the audience’s attention. The main characters, Krišjānis and Dārta, are played by two pairs of great actors, but the story is full of unexpected plot twists, merging the characters and events of the first national awakening with elements of the third national awakening that took place at the time when the film was made.

Dai Sijie’s autobiographical third feature, adapted from his autobiographical first novel, is a visually assured reconstruction of memory and time. The story details the experiences of two friends, Luo and Ma, as they try to survive a Maoist reeducation camp in a remote mountain village during the Cultural Revolution. Outmaneuvering the party official who watches over them, they pursue the beautiful granddaughter of the village tailor, meeting with her secretly to read books by outlawed writers. In their most radical act, they persuade the villagers that the Mozart pieces Luo plays on his violin are songs about the revolution.

In 1939, Charlotte Salomon leaves Berlin to seek refuge at her grandparents’ villa in the south of France. A little later, war breaks out, and Charlotte must, besides forgetting all she left behind, deal with her grandmother’s depression, and her mother’s suicide. To fight despair, Charlotte starts to paint, producing over one thousand images. “Is my life real, or is it theater?” This is the title she gives her body of work, which highlights her former life in Berlin. She finds herself though her art, but in 1943 is deported to Germany and Auschwitz.

Weisz regarded Charlotte as one of his most personal films. “I could divide my life into the period before Charlotte and after Charlotte,” he once said. To make the film, he temporarily moved to Berlin — the city where his father, Géza Weisz, spent the first thirty years of his life before fleeing to the Netherlands to escape the Nazis. “That brought me very close to my own history.”

Many thanks to Michael for sending me a copy of this film. This is the only uncut version of this film on the internet, from the original ABC airing in 1980, all other versions out there are of shorter runtime, the audio on this copy has some noise but I decided to not touch it as I don’t think it’s too bad.
