A collaboration by four budding Indonesian filmmmakers, ‘Kuldesak’ intercuts the stories of four young urbanites, exploring problems and dilemmas in contemporary Jakarta. Aksan is an aspiring filmmaker in need of money to finance his first film; Andre, a lonely teen on his birthday who somewhat identifies with Kurt Cobain; Dina, the box office attendant is preoccupied with her television star idol who often comes to the theatre she works at; and Lina, the office girl is taken hostage by her own boss. The film took three years to complete, commencing pre-production in 1996 during the Suharto rule and was released five months after his resignation.

Fresh out of prison, Git rescues a former best friend (now living with Git’s girlfriend) from a beating at the hands of loan sharks. It’s a tougher assignment than it seems: Git’s a novice, Bunny’s prone to rash acts, Frank doesn’t want to be found (and once he’s found, he has no money), and maybe Tom’s planning to murder Frank, which puts Git in a moral dilemma. Then, there’s the long-ago disappearance of Sonny Mulligan. What’s a decent and stand-up lad to do?

CRIMINALS OF THE AIR (1937)

Undercover agent Mark Owens is sent to aid the Border Patrol in the trans-border town of Hernandez in breaking up a well-organized band of smugglers. Since the town is also noted for a place for obtaining quick marriages on the Mexico side, Mark obtains the job of pilot on “The Honeymoon Express.” He does not realize that he has been recognized as a G-Man by “Hot Cake” Joe, operator of a sandwich stand and an informant for the smugglers. Reporter Nancy Rawlings, assigned to the airport on the American side of the border, sees Mike running the matrimonial express in his flamboyant uniform, and thinks he is ridiculous enough to make a good story.
