The school’s run down, but it’s not his fault, he just runs it with limited resources?
I saw Thicker Than Blood (1998) long enough ago to need to rewatch the start here – thanks for the up – to remember it.
Like many TVMs, it’s very watchable, without any wasted scenes or dialogue confusing a simple story. Fairly sure the plot’s exactly how you’d imagine it – young teacher helping kids avoid crime, although the title suggests a choice has to be made between school, crime, and family, and I don’t remember that bit – probably some conflict in the teacher’s private life too. I might have also confused some of it with the bad cop turned good teacher on The Wire too (the one who had rage issues, so couldn’t be a teacher IRL, but they somehow disappeared at his school – also had a dominant father/in-law, or something).
Supposedly Mickey Rourke’s favourite film he was in (the young teacher is the lead), and certainly one of the few decent films he made after his ’80s stardom – Year of the Dragon (1985) being his actual best film and best performance.
