Three portraits of ladies of a certain age and their poignant vulnerabilities … The last is a wistful holiday remembrance … The first two have often been called “cruel” — but I think that Capote was very sympathetic to these all too human if also tragic characterizations of how desperation and delusion can cloud our judgement, and in extremis, our ability to live in and cope with the “real world” surrounding us — which may, alas, at times extend little sympathy to our outdated ego contructs …
