I’ve been wanting to see it in a subtitled version for years and was not disappointed. Based on story and screenplay by Kortner, it is a poignant rendition of a homeward journey in the immediate post-war years, revealing tensions, but holding out faint hope for the future. This is one of the most interesting examples of post-war German cinema before entertainment and escapism took over.. ,
