I had never heard of this film before, but I *had* heard of the director, Tomotaka Tasaka. During the war, he had been one of the film industry’s most successful propagandists, with the war classics Five Scouts and Mud and Soldiers. So it’s a bit odd that this movie so strongly preaches peace, as the lovely teacher played by Arima talks to her students at great length about UNESCO, explaining how it teaches all of us that people everywhere are all the same and that there should be no more wars. The boy, Genta, is an unusual young hero in his powerful sense of justice, and his insistence on what’s right gets him into trouble more than once. What’s fresh and appealing about this movie is that some seemingly predictable situations end unpredictably, as at the end of the children’s day at the amusement park. Overall, the film is great fun (though it veers into tearjerker territory), and has wonderful performances, particularly by Michiyo Kogure as the mother. And did I mention that Ineko Arima is lovely?

I can get the ones that us OK fine, but this, Ukrainskaya rapsodiya, Aktion J, and other movies that use this type of player, won’t play. And I’m trying to figure out if there is something I can do on my end as a fix. And if they are they playing fine for others?
