Good movie. The synopsis above is misleading. Maddelena’s younger sister and brother aren’t hostile towards her. They don’t know why she has come back. But all the women on the island know and they treat her like dirt. She’s not in love with Donato. She knows he’s a scoundrel so really her only solace is that she may be able to save her younger sister from him. I prefer the subtitled version though the dubbed version has some additional scenes including, I think, a better ending. Some of the plot points are made more explicit in the dubbed version though much of the dialogue regarding Maddelena’s former occupation was changed I presume to comply with the puritanical Hays Code.
