A genuine 10/10 masterpiece, an emotional rollercoaster ride from start to finish.

I don’t know where to start. With the director? Bardem is a name totally new to me, but I will definitly search for more from this director. The tone of this movie is so sorrowful and bleak, but then again with glimpses of hope and intense feelings of deep love, that I was constantly reminded of Michelangelo ANTONIONIs maybe most powerful movie IL GRIDO. The comparisons are so many that I won’t start to list them, it would take forever. These are companion pieces. Bardem must be some kind of Spanish Antonioni.

The leads are terrific. Paloma Veldes, who might still be alive at 79 as of this writing, is a stunner. She is such a beautiful cute actress, and so vulnerable, that I constantly felt the urge to take her into my arms to comfort her. She plays an 18 year old here and she was indeed only 19, when this was shot. The ideal actress cor the part. It is impossible to take ones eyes off her.

Alfredo Alcon was 33 and plays a character of 29, also on spot. Like the part in IL GRIDO, his character is just a bit to weak a person to succeed, and this is such a sad sad sad outcome.

The music by Isidro Maiztegui – what a name – is up there with the best Maestros like Piero Piccioni and Giovanni Fusco composed, still his name is totally unknown, even to me.

The black and white photographpy is stellar. A lot more could be said, but … judge yourself, this is unforgettable!

Would this be an Italian movie, or a French, it would be a hailed masterpiece, but being Spanish it seems to be forgotten. A pity!
